If the tax return you attach to Form W-7 is filed after the return’s due date, you may owe interest and/or penalties. If you already have an ITIN but fail to submit a U.S. tax return in any given calendar year, your Individual Taxpayer Identification Number may expire. If this happens, you’ll need to resubmit all your materials – along with your most recently completed U.S. federal tax return.

Once the form has been received by the IRS, it will take about 7-10 weeks to process. After that, you will receive your ITIN via mail and you can start filling taxes. To obtain an ITIN, you must complete IRS Form W-7, IRS Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. The Form W-7 requires documentation substantiating foreign/alien status and true identity for each individual.
